Southampton kicked off the league season with a trip to Romsey in an action-packed draw that saw eight tries, two yellow cards and a dramatic penalty miss with the final kick of the game.
Romsey opened the scoring with a try on the 20 minute mark but Southampton hit back shortly after with a try from new captain Jordan Dashwood. A second try from Romsey gave them a 14-5 lead before Tyler Ross pulled one back for Southampton. The conversion left the score at 14-12.
Saints then had to complete the first half with 14 players after Dashwood was sin binned and Romsey capitalised on the advantage with a third try as the half came to an end. Half time score was 19-12 to the home side.
Romsey were unable to extend their lead with the extra man and when Southampton were back to full strength Robbie Ashby narrowed the gap to two points with a try.
A penalty extended Romsey's lead again before Josh Fearon dragged Southampton back into contention with a try. Poor discipline then cost Southampton again when Aaron Owen was sin binned and Romsey added a penalty and an unconverted try, taking the score to 27-22.
As the clock ticked down, centre Tommy Ashby crossed the try line to level the scores at 27-27. The game then ended in dramatic fashion as Romsey were awarded a penny with the last kick of the game. They took the chance for the three points that would have won the game, but the kick was missed and the game ended a draw.
